12 Days of Bionicle MOCs: 2019
BZPowerFriday, December 13th, 2019 at 3:35am by Jason, BZPower Reporter

2019 may have been a year without a proper constraction theme, but that doesn't mean the builders have been neglecting the Bionicle / CCBS building styles. There have been some amazing MOCs built this year, and the staff at BZPower decided that we wanted to feature some of the better ones over the next twelve days. After browsing through the BZPower Flickr page and making some tough decisions, we've picked some of the better models from the year to show off. Read on to see the full list, and stay tuned to BZPower to check out all these great creations!

Day 1 - The Caretaker by DeeVee

    The Caretaker

We'll start off with an amazing creation by Patrick Biggs, who created The Caretaker. The various curves really do a good job at blending the horse body with the torso, and everything flows together very well. The while deer skull helmet and pose really give it a mystical element, as if it really were a spirit you could come across while lost in the woods. A very marvelous creation indeed.

Day 2 - Son of Makuta - Shapeshifting by [VB]

    Son of Makuta - Shapeshifting

The Rahkshi were a revolutionary step up for Bionicle sets back in the day, but in the end they were all just one design. Back in February, [VB] designed a MOC based on one of the Rahkshi powers we didn't see in the story: Shapeshifting. The sturdy legs and golden spines are nicely detailed, and the kraata head invokes the imagery of the Mask of Light movie Rahkshi very well. But what really makes this model stand out are the crazy curves and tendrils as it shapeshifts its left arm. The action in the pose really gives character to the Rahkshi and its abilities!

Day 3 - Asura by Hongjun Youn

    Asura

Asura are a type of power seeking demigod in Hinduism, and that really comes across in Hongjun Youn's model. He makes great use of specialized dark red pieces and more to create this six armed superhuman, which includes a stylized head in the traditional location while another face pops out of the torso in spectacular fashion. This creation just radiates power!

Day 4 - Mantis by AlexParkDesigns

    Mantis

Some models are designed for pure efficiency, and that's what AlexParkDesigns did with his Mantis MOC, intended for deforestation and destruction. The creation has a crazy otherworldly design with some excellent curved elements on the body and legs. Further shots of it also demonstrate the creative posability of the model, showing that it is quite limber. I wouldn't want to come across this while traveling in the forest.

Day 5 - The Wyre by Hafynx

    The Wyre

Coming straight out of your nightmares is the Wyre by Hafynx. The skull is structurally amazing, from the curved rows of teeth to the arching forehead to the glowing red eyes topped with golden eyebrows. What really brings this model to life are the tentacles; it's a simple but effective design that really adds motion and a sense of intimidation to the model. A very awesome MOC, but I do hope I never see something like it pop out of the shadows at me!

Day 6 - Magical Mecha Maiden Maye by Bodhi Poharu

    Magical Mecha Maiden Maye

Bodhi Poharu has crafted a smaller model with his alliterative Magical Mecha Maiden Maye, but there is still a lot of astonishing design work here. Of particular interest is the use of the purple and black Ninjago spinner utilized as a dress, but there are also neat designs for the hands, hair, and feet, as well as a nice use of the purple diamond Elves piece on the torso. The electrifying base and accompanying drones also add to the overall scene, making this Magical Mecha Maiden a force to be reckoned with!

Day 7 - The Husk of Minaurogg by Djokson

    The Husk of Minaurogg

Djokson has made a lot of amazing MOCs this year, but the Husk of Minaurogg is particularly impressive. The Minotaur-like design itself it pretty great, from the stylized and powerful legs to the nicely angled head. But to throw things for a loop, he added a parasite which forms a massive spiny arm with purple globs bursting out of the shoulder, as well as the subtle pink eye. It's a very compelling fusion of the two concepts into a great model. Of course, I wouldn't want to encounter this while wandering through a labyrinth or abandoned spaceship.

Day 8 - Chancellor Adramelech by Cezium

    Chancellor Adramelech

A demon straight out of Dictionnaire Infernal, Chancellor Adramelech was often depicted with the tail feathers of a peacock. Cezium has recreated that using an elegant arc of Ninjago dragon heads to a great effect. The body and legs do a good job of representing the equine characteristics of the demon, and the subtle pose makes him look like he's carefully considering how to begin your torment. Even the irregular tiled base helps set the disposition of this model; it's all well done.

Day 9 - Crystalline Tree by Duncan Lindbo

    Crystalline Tree

If you were at the BrickFair Virginia Bionicle section this year, you probably took notice of Duncan Lindbo's remarkable Crystalline Tree. He makes great use of the various trans purple CCBS pieces to construct an intriguing looking structure. It sits atop an intricate base, which includes a few trans blue cracks to add to the crystal-like mood, but the most impressive bit is the light at the bottom which makes the whole tree glow in the darkness. It's quite impressive what could be made using only a few types of simple pieces.

Day 10 - Marko the Undead Cowboy by Dylan Mievis

    Marko the Undead Cowboy

The Wild West just got a bit creepier thanks to the addition of Dylan Mievis's Marko the Undead Cowboy. From the boots to the hat to the rifle, there's a lot of great design work here; I especially like the sheriff's badge wedged into the ribcage. He did a good job merging the cowboy outfit onto a skeletal figure while keeping both themes distinct. I wouldn't want to break the law in his town!

Day 11 - Oracle Dragon by Jayfa

    Oracle Dragon

Jayfa has made a lot of great MOCs this year, but the Oracle Dragon certainly stands out. The elegant curves and spikes give this creature an awesome shape with a compelling hair-like texture and does a good job at representing the source material. The coloring is also very well done, and made all the more impressive with the use of glow in the dark elements. A fabulous model indeed!

Day 12 - Love is Canon by The Secret Walrus

    Love is Canon

We'll end this series with a model showcasing two fan favorite characters from Bionicle's early years. Anthony Wilson's Love is Canon depicts the relationship between Macku and Hewkii, the power couple Bionicle Gen 1. He does a great job crafting their bodies differently to represent their different element, as well as giving them some nice accessories like Macku's lei and doll. Of course, the eyes behind the masks really add an extra level of expressiveness to the characters and is a great touch. I also like the crab on the base who is rooting for this relationship. Overall, it's a very cute scene!

I hope you've enjoyed this selection of 2019 Bionicle MOCs. These have certainly inspired me to pull out my Bionicle parts and start building again! I'm really excited to see what all the builders will have to show us in 2020. Thanks for visiting, and happy holidays!
