Toy Fair 2020: Friends
Monday, February 24th, 2020 at 9:54pm by Andrew, BZPower News Manager
Continuing our Toy Fair 2020 coverage, we're taking a look at Friends next. It was once of the few themes that had unreleased sets on display, namely the second way of Play Cubes - which are a bit reminiscent of Polly Pocket if you're looking for a comparison. We're not going to go into a huge amount of depth, but you can still check out what the original minidoll theme is up to.
Friends
Most of the sets in the January wave are Heartlake City focused. It's always good to get some more locations in the town, and as usual there's lots of great colors. The standout for me was Nature Glamping, because apparently 'glamping' is mainstream enough for LEGO to make a set about it.

The Play Cubes are the big thing Friends seems to be trying out this year. They're a little similar to the pods we've seen in past years, but a bit bigger. They have studs on the top and anti-studs on the bottom, so you can stack them up easily. There's also studs on the 'floor' on the inside and a couple on the 'walls,' which adds a lot of opportunities for building in them. The final part of the Play Cubes is that they're blind boxes - each one comes with an animal in one of four colors, which I guess is to encourage trading with your friends to get the colors you want. We'll see how that goes over with collectors.

The first of the new Play Cubes we saw, this one is a bit disappointing in the build, with no SNOT techniques used.

Stephanie's cube is only mildly better, with the main standout being the poodle mold, which if it isn't new is not one we see often.

The chocolate fountain in Olivia's cube is a nice touch, and it looks like we get a nice variety of printed sweet-related tiles.

BZPower Reporter Danny found this Cube a little odd, but who doesn't want a movie theater with just one seat for yourself? It's the best seat in the house! I also like the new owl mold, although the best animal is reserved for...

LLAMAS! Whoever managed to get a LEGO llama approved is a hero. I never thought I wanted a LEGO llama until I saw one, but this certainly makes this the best Play Cube of the bunch.
What have we learned here today? Friends is still Friends, with its usual selection of solid set designs, augmented in 2020 by Polly Pockets and llamas! Check out the rest of our Toy Fair 2020 coverage right here and stay tuned for more, right here on BZPower!
