A Look Back at the History of Ninjago - Part 4

Our journey through time comes closer to the present as we look at Ninjago over the years. Today we're examining 2016, 2017, and 2018, which saw the ninjas soar to new heights on the silver screen! (Remember when we could go to the movies?) Read on to see what LEGO was kind enough to share with us!
2016
Our first two images are some key art from 2016, the first focusing on the Skybound arc and the second on Day of the Departed. Then we have a really cool piece of concept art for what would eventually become Cole's Dragon, and boy is it awesome!
2017
Obviously the main push of 2017 was The LEGO Ninjago Movie, which has the distinction of being the fourth-highest grossing LEGO movie and the only one to not be 'certified fresh' by Rotten Tomatoes. What it lacked in a cohesive plot, however, it made up for with amazing sets. Such as...
Ninjago City! There's nothing really new to see here, but I think it's worth making a little extra space to celebrate the set that would kick off what has now become a series of fantastic models with the addition of the Docks and Gardens.
To finish off 2017, we're going back to the TV series to share some concept art from The Hands of Time. While the final sets used red snakes and lots of warmer colors, I love the look of this snake mech with all the little heads popping out.
2018
We're starting off our look at 2018 with a trio of sketches of Sensei Wu, Kai (maybe), and Garmadon. Each has a unique emotional feel that helps convey a part of the story.
Next we have a baker's dozen of drawings depicting the ninjas, their allies, and a few of their adversaries. All of these are pretty fantastic and capture the many characters quite well.
Rounding things out for this year we have some early designs of the Oni masks, with their unique shaping and printing. It's interesting to see some 'regular' helmets on there too to help keep the new designs 'in system.'
We're getting close to the present in our revisiting of Ninjago's ten years. That means there's only one more story to go. Check back soon for that right here on BZPower!
