Set Review: 30280 The Piece of Resistance
ReviewTuesday, January 28th, 2014 at 9:35pm by Andrew, BZPower News Manager

We've reviewed most of the big LEGO Movie sets that are out, but we thought we should review some of the little ones too! LEGO sent us a bunch of polybags recently, and today we're looking at 30280 The Piece of Resistance. To see what I thought, keep on reading! If you want to win a copy for yourself, make sure you watch the video!

    Presentation
From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.

The packaging is pretty basic - it's a plastic bag. The art clearly indicates the contents of said bag, and you can't miss The LEGO Movie logo letting you know what theme it's for. The back of the bag is a veritable wall of text, fitting in legal disclaimers and other things.

    Building
Half the fun is had building the set. How fun is it to build and how easy or challenging is it?

The set comes together in the blink of an eye. There's still some interesting bits making the play feature though, so it'll keep you engaged for the couple of minutes it takes.

    Set Design
Now that the set is complete, we can critique how it looks from every angle. New or interesting pieces can also be examined here.

If you're looking for grey slopes to help you do some rock-scaping, this set is for you. There's some good variety in the slopes, but not much else. You do get a couple minifig brackets which are nice, as well as another Piece of Resistance (1x1x2 brick with a hole in the side). Really not bad for a polybag.

No matter which way you look at it, this set rocks. Or it's made of rocks. Or made of LEGO bricks to look like rocks. It does a great job evoking the feeling of a mine, with the 1x1 trans-yellow plates looking like gold or mineral deposits. The Piece of Resistance kind of stands out from some angles, but there's only so much they can do with a set this size. It works, for sure.

At first I thought I was getting yet another Emmet fig, but as I was recording the video I realized he has a different face print. It's also different from the one in the Collectible Minigure sets, so this is the only place I know of to get this version of Emmet. The hair and body are the same unfortunately, but he's still a great little construction worker.

    Playability
The other half of the fun is in playing with the set. How well does the set function and is it enjoyable to play with?

I'm impressed that the designers managed to fit a play feature in a set this small. When you push down on the red Technic lift-arm, a piece of the rock pops off and the Piece of Resistance is revealed. The feature works really well, and I'll take something like this over flick-fire missiles any day.

I'm assuming this set is supposed to recreate a pivotal scene early in the movie where Emmet finds the Piece of Resistance. From that perspective, this set offers some good role-play value and will allow kids to imagine themselves as part of an important spot in the film.

    Final Thoughts
Once it's all said and done, how does the set stack up? Should I get it?

    Pros
    What's to like?

    • Unique Emmet print
    • Cool play features
    • Good role-play potential
    • Useful parts

    Cons
    What's not to like?

    • Only Emmet's face is unique

That con is really minor, so I definitely recommend this set. For a few bucks you get a unique version of the main character, a key scene in The LEGO Movie, and some good parts. Hard to pass that up. And if you scroll back up and watch the video, you can find out how you can win a free copy of the set too!

Thanks everyone for reading and thanks to LEGO for providing us with the set. Questions and comments as always can be directed to the Talkback. If you watched our unboxing video, you know this isn't the only LEGO Movie polybag we have, so keep checking back for those and more, right here on BZPower.
