Set Review: Stormer and Rocka Machine Combiner
Sunday, December 8th, 2013 at 7:35pm by Benjamin, BZPower Reporter
After two exciting reviews of Stormer's and Rocka's battle machines, they have come together to fight the monsters together! Using their brains and brawn, they combine their machines into one towering creation. Reporter ChocolateFrogs here to share a video review of combined model to see just how well it will fare against the raging Hero Factory kaiju!
This comes from the Stormer Freeze Machine and the Rocka Stealth Machine. The combo instructions can be found here. LEGO has provided all three in advance of these sets January (everywhere except North America) and March (North America) release dates. Thanks, TLG!
Building
Half the fun is had building the set. How fun is it to build and how easy or challenging is it?
The build is pretty straightforward from the feet up. The techniques used here are previously seen in the two models used in this set, so it's nothing too challenging. There is more armor layering because of the amount of armor at hand, which is nice.
There are more leftover pieces than I expected, but I'm pretty much just bummed about the exclusion of the ice-swords.
Set Design
Now that the set is complete, we can critique how it looks from every angle. New or interesting pieces can also be examined here.
I like how there is more armor all over this mech than either individual bots have. However, the legs are short and the wide waist doesn't help improve those aesthetics either. The claw with the internal laser is neat, and I like the layering of armor.
Playability
The other half of the fun is in playing with the set. How well does the set function and is it enjoyable to play with.
Had I a larger monster for this mech to fight, the battle would be awesome. The spinning claws and the Zamor sphere launcher are weapons not to be reckoned with. But while the big feet keep him sturdy, it might fall over with a quick knock from the foe due to its size.
Final Thoughts
Once it's all said and done, how does the set stack up? Should I get it?
Pros
What's to like?
- Lots of armor used
- Spinny laser claw
Cons
What's not to like?
- Short legs on a wide frame
- Lack of ice-sword
In the end, this is a neat combo model worth building and playing with. While a little clunky here and there, it makes up for it with other parts of the build and its fighting power.
