    Interview: Greg Farshtey, comic writer
OpinionWednesday, September 4th, 2002 at 9:37pm by Mark, BZPower Reporter

Comic 8 BZPower had a chance to talk with Bionicle comic writer Greg Farshety and ask a few questions that have been cluttering the BZPower boards.

BZPower: Have you worked with LEGO on other projects besides BIONICLE? How did LEGO originally approach you to work for them?
Greg Farshety: I am on staff at the LEGO Company, employed in the Creative Center in Enfield, CT. I write the LEGO Magazine, some web content, the BIONICLE comic, the GALIDOR comic, and whatever else anyone asks me to do. I started in October 2000, and got the opportunity to write the BIONICLE comic based on some sample script pages I submitted.

BZP: What other works have you written besides BIONICLE comics?
GF: Prior to coming to work here, I had three novels and a few short stories published. I had also written or co-written over 30 roleplaying game books.

BZP: When did you first become interested in becoming a writer?
GF: Probably high school. I had always enjoyed writing, and I started writing humor in high school. I liked seeing that immediate reaction from people who read my stuff. All of my jobs since I left college have involved writing in one way or another.

BZP: Does LEGO plan on continuing the BIONICLE comic series past issue 9?
GF: Yes, as far as I know that is the plan and I believe I will still be writing them going forward. We have had a wonderful relationship with DC and everyone is looking forward to it continuing.

BZP: Are there plans for the Shadow Toa to return in the future?
GF: Not that I know of. However, the overall planning for the BIONICLE storyline is done by the BIONICLE team in Europe and America, so they may have things in mind for the future that I am not aware of yet.

BZP: Was it difficult dealing with the storyline shifting from the Mata Nui game to the comics? How will the 2003 storyline be relayed?
GF: Not really everyone on the BIONICLE team works closely together to maintain continuity. Myself, web producer Leah Weston, LEGO Interactive game producers, and the key players on the story team have to maintain close touch so that we all stay on the same page. So regardless of how or where the story is told and it will still be told in many different places, including the direct-to-video next year how we work pretty much stays the same.

BZP: Where was the PC game supposed to fit into the story?
GF: The PC game, as I understand it, was originally meant to include the wrap-up of 2001 the finding of the gold masks, the struggle with the Shadow Toa (which were an aspect of Makuta), etc. When, for technical reasons, the decision was made not to release the game, we just did the best we could to inform the fans of what had happened as we moved into the 2002 storyline.
